The first modern shoe factory was born in Vigevano in 1866, and since the beginning of the twentieth century the city has produced more than one third of the shoes made in Italy. In 1952, when Vigevano hosted the International Shoe Fair, it was manufacturing thirty million pairs of shoes a year. Despite the high value placed on the shoe industry, the basic agricultural soul of the city has been preserved. Just beyond the fortifications are rice fields, windmills, and farms that are active to this day.
To enter the historic center of Vigevano is to be transported to another time. The Piazza Ducale was built between 1492 and 1494 by Ludovico il Moro Sforza, Duke of Milan, and is rightly considered one of the most beautiful Renaissance squares in Italy. A perfect rectangle paved with cobblestones taken from the Ticino riverbed, the piazza was cut to fit into the urban fabric of Vigevano. On one side of the square stands the seventeenth-century concave facade of the Duomo, designed by the bishop-architect Juan Caramuel de Lobkowitz. Some believe the facade was renovated because it is not in alignment with the church but is accentuated by four great arches and perfectly integrated into the square.
The complex of the Palazzo Ducale is imposing, but hidden from sight by houses, even on the side where once a long ramp connected it with the square; only its high tower betrays its presence. Luchino Visconti, the powerful ruler of Vigevano in 1337, began the transformation of the medieval center to make room for a castle. With the help of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Galeazzo Maria Sforza, and Ludovico il Moro, the castle became one of the most elaborate residences of the fifteenth century and included stables, the Palazzo delle Dame, and even a falconry. Among the artists and architects who contributed to the project were Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) and, arguably the greatest architect of his time, Donato Bramante (1444-1514). The stables appearing in Leonardo’s drawings were designed to hold up to three hundred horses.
Vigevano is a town and commune in the province of Pavia, Lombardy, northern Italy, which possesses many artistic treasures and runs a huge industrial business. It is at the center of a district called Lomellina, a great rice-growing agricultural centre.

With HDTVs, there is a very large amount on variation in quality. In many cases, the lowest-priced models on Black Friday are stripped-down models made exclusively for that retailer’s sale. In many cases they lack features and the quality components used to manufacture higher priced models. That doesn’t necessarily mean that these deals aren’t great – it’s just a case of buyer beware. You should not expect $ 2,000 performance from a $ 500 HDTV.
The two primary types of flat panel HDTVs in the Black Friday ads will be LCD and Plasma. Plasma HDTVs tend to be cheaper going by cost per inch, but that is not always the case as there are some very high-end, highly rated plasma models out there. The maximum resolution of an HDTV is also something that you’ll see in the ads. Most HDTVs will either be 1080p or 720p. These numbers represent the maximum lines of horizontal resolution that the TV can display at once. 1080p is the native resolution for things like Blu-ray, some video games and other sources, and being higher resolution means that these models will cost more.
On to price predictions. We fully expect to see 42″ plasma and HDTVs in the $ 499 range this year. During the last few months on GottaDeal.com, we’ve posted deals for 42″ HDTVs for under $ 700 in a few cases, so it’s completely realistic to expect at least one retailer to have a deal under $ 500 on such a model. These cheaper HDTVs will likely be 720p and will lack features found in more expensive models. We expect prices on 50″ plasma and LCD HDTVs to also fall this Black Friday, perhaps to somewhere around $ 699-749.
Stepping up to the full 1080p resolution will cost a little bit more, but in most cases it will be worth the extra cost when you factor in how long you will be using this HDTV and how most sources in the future (television, movies, video games) will be in native 1080p resolution. On GottaDeal.com we’ve posted 42″ 1080p LCD HDTVs for under $ 800 recently, so it would not surprise us to see a 42″ 1080p LCD HDTV in Black Friday ads for $ 599. 46″ and 50″ versions should be available for around $ 749 and $ 999 respectively.
Deals on smaller HDTVs (and standard TVs with the new digital tuners) will also be plentiful this year. 32″ LCD HDTVs will be had for $ 349-399 and 37″ models will be $ 499 or less. For those looking to replace smaller bedroom TVs with HDTVs, expect great deals on both smaller LCD HDTVs as well as standard tube TVs that now include the new digital ATSC tuners. Stores these days tend to not stock as many of these because of size constraints, but they will often make one-time purchases for Black Friday, so expect something like a 20″ TV with digital tuner in the $ 79-99 range.

As for the new “netbooks”, we expect those to also be discounted on Black Friday, as retailers will use the ultra-low prices to “shock” the average consumer who wasn’t aware that these laptops even existed. We’ve posted deals on GottaDeal.com during the year for these netbooks for as low as $ 199. As with regular laptops, these mini machines vary greatly in specs and features. We expect to see the cheapest of these netbooks for around $ 149 this Black Friday, but there will be deals on models with better features. Realize that these are not meant to be your primary machine. They are great for light tasks such as web browsing and e-mail, but the small screen size and smaller keyboard make long-term use uncomfortable.
Desktop computers will continue to sell, however we’re reaching the point of diminishing returns as any budget desktop bought last Black Friday will be just as good as most advertised this year. For 99% of daily tasks (internet, e-mail, homework, office work), it doesn’t take more than a low-end desktop to handle these tasks. This year we expect a mid-level desktop (dual core processor, 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, DVD burner) bundled with a 19″ or 20″ LCD monitor to be in the $ 299 range. Upgrade to a faster processor, more RAM, bigger hard drive and a 22″ monitor for $ 100 more.
We predict computer peripherals to be hotter this year than in previous years. Expect hot deals on LCD monitors – we are expecting 19″ monitors for $ 69-79 and 22″ models for possibly as low as $ 99. 24″ models should be around $ 199 as well. With Blu-ray being the next-generation format winner, we expect some nice deals on both internal and external Blu-ray drives for PCs. Expect internal drives for $ 99 and external for $ 149. Digital picture frames hit mainstream last year and it seemed like every store had at least one in their ad, regardless of if they were an electronics store or not. Prices on these have fallen drastically as well. We’ve posted deals on GottaDeal.com during the last few months for under $ 30 for digital frames. In the ads this year we expect 5″ frames for $ 20, 7″ frames for $ 30 and 10″ frames for $ 60. The matching digital photo viewer keychains will also be advertised, probably for as low as $ 5. Again with these, you get what you pay for.

Summer Fashion News From Oz: Catwalk News from Australian Fashion Week
So the weather might’ve taken a turn for the worst as we regress into a struggling spring, but even volcanic ash clouds couldn’t stop us from ranging over the globe to find breaking fashion news as it happens. Today marks the 15th Australian Fashion Week, and where we’ve been sure to keep a warmer plan-B wardrobe in case of sun-failure, our antipodean counterparts have been casting off everything possible to emerge beach-ready at the feet of women’s clothing and fashion. The back-story to this celebration of the best Aussie catwalk collections reads like a topsy-turvy version of complaints and outcries on our side of the world during the European Fashion Weeks, with the burgeoning of what is set to be the world’s first aboriginal (really?) face of Vogue, Samantha Harris (18), who took to the runway today in Sydney before a dazzled crowd. Compare this with French V’s still quite unbelievable treatment of racial identity not too long ago, and things seem a little inside out. Further furore came in the form of pleas from plus size friendly clothing agencies accusing the designers and stylists of skinny elitism in their selection of models, the complaint being that this marked a backwards step for Australia’s bid for establishing itself as the leading fashion base outside of Europe. But what of reports from the collections? There are many instances that can be provided. Fighting through the Avatar-themed model stuff was a trend for bikinis worn with platform boots in electric neon colours, at least showing that you don’t need to enter the body of a blue alien to bring some long, lithe legs into your poolside look. Bathing caps were also an ironic favourite that seemed to work better than had been intended, coming in a range of just as bright colours, and giving a feminine cool to contrast with all that bare skin. Fitting with the tribalism of the Avatar theme was a nod towards this season’s trend for colour prints in their beach sun-shade form, with sarongs and kaftan-like wonders being spun from the most vibrant of patterns imaginable. Slightly more covered-up but a little more fun was the penchant for floral and pastel blouses and fitted shirts worn over bikini bottoms with flat shoes, as well as a revealing take on the nautical look with some incredibly scant denim shorts. Can we do Bondai Beach in Bournemouth or Bristol? I’m sure we can have fun trying. The show was not without its more outgoing additions, with white playsuits, nacre cocktail dresses and white short suit combinations all given the sun-kissed twist. Jackets and belted coats for the sundown campfire moments gave a particular nod to a very English breed of outerwear. If you can chase down the photos from the shoot, grab what you can for a sneak look at half of your suitcase’s contents this summer.

We love search engines, but they run on algorithms, not creative juices. It’s never okay to wear a white tie with a frilled shirt, but try asking a search engine this, and it would only send you to sites that will sell you a frilled shirt or a tie, if not both. This is where Goddiva’s Top 10 Fashion Websites enters the picture. We love fashion, that’s a given, but we also have the fashion chops to back this liking with. We chose our top ten sites based on our working knowledge of what works and what doesn’t. We look for depth and breadth and diversity. We look for sites that know the fashion landscape, sites with that je ne sais quoi that makes them stand out from the million and one other websites online.

This site is the online home of Vogue – and rightly so. After all, Style.com is a fashion powerhouse. With over 58,000 runway looks to check out, you can choose to do your browsing by trend, season, or designer. You can keep yourself abreast with the latest in fashion, click through Vogue’s photos, get the latest dibs on parties, people, and what the gorgeous people are wearing, or share your opinion in fashion forums. Style.com is what every store claims it is but actually isn’t – a one-stop shop for the fashionable and stylish. It’s so complete and up-to-date it has made many fashion magazines obsolete.
